drmticoFaulty Choirs / Music Visual / OSYMYSO

Faulty Choirs is a music visual designed, directed and animated by me for the song of the same name – composed, arranged and produced by OSYMYSO. The film has been described as having a playful feel with lively characters, bright colours and psychedelic interpretations of the music. The hand drawn characters are animated frame by frame, digitally manipulated using a combination of After Effects, Photoshop and Painter. The music visual combines photography and illustration with original cartoon characters. The final film was completed in After Effects and Premiere. The characters I designed for the video were commended at the 2009 Digital Artist Awards.

rbgifThe Apple / Short Film

The Apple is a short film about Arthur, a painter struggling to complete a still life. Animated and directed by Rafi, The Apple is an exercise in story-telling with a single character, no spoken dialogue and a time restriction of 60 seconds. The story was written with hand drawn storyboards which then developed into an animatic. The final film is animated in Maya.

The Apple began as a final term project at Animation Mentor (Summer 2006) with mentorship from Brett Coderre. The film was completed after graduation (Winter 2006).

People / Character Design & Illustration / Distributables

I recently completed a series of illustrations for Distributables - a site aimed at democratising charitable service by connecting people who wish to share services and distribute knowledge between each other. Distributables hired me to design eight characters that visually represent the diversity of the people using the website. Each design had to feature an umbrella (a key part of the brand) and every character had to be distinct with their specific skill and profession depicted clearly.I was responsible for coming up with the characters, their professions and all their unique quirks and specific talents as well as developing the art direction and establishing the illustration style for the brand.

Elizabeth Avenue / Picture Book / King Bee Entertainment

Elizabeth Avenue is a picture book for children aged 6 - 8 years. I was employed as Art Director and Illustrator on this project and created these character designs during the visual development stage. All drawings were made with Prismacolor and Albrecht Durer coloured pencils on textured paper.

eagleicoIT Man & Eagle / Commercial / Eagle Contracting

Eagle Contracting approached me to create an animated commercial to promote their accounting and payroll services. IT contractors are their primary target audience, so I created IT Man and his trusty sidekick Eagle who helps IT Man overcome his admin dilemmas so he can focus on what he does best - rescuing computers!

With the client's limited time and budget in mind I conceived the scenario in storyboard, wrote and designed the characters, directed the voice cast, illustrated and animated the commercial in 3 weeks. The commercial features on the Eagle Contracting website and illustrations of the key characters are the main visual element of the campaign.

mowbliicoMowblis in Fashion / Character Design / Carphone Warehouse

Character designs based on Mowbli (property of Carphone Warehouse). The existing Mowbli asset was adapted for the theme of "fashion". The full suite of illustrated characters includes catwalk models, fashion photographers, media darlings and luvvies of the fashion world.

smlicoSuper Mobile Land / Character Design / Nokia / JWT

For the launch of a range of high-end mobile handsets from Nokia, London ad agency JWT approached me to design the inhabitants of Super Mobile Land - a world filled with colourful, diverse characters. This global advertising campaign features over eighty unique characters designed, illustrated and named by your’s truly.

I developed an art style inspired by vintage computer game “sprite” graphics whereby characters are grouped into eight distinct species identified by their pixel and colour count. Every character has a unique personality, and several like to associate themselves with specific device features and services such as music, gaming, maps, email, social networking, video, photos, sms/mms and ovi.

All characters began as a rough pencil sketch and evolved into their final look in Illustrator.

drmticoRadio Fish Shop / Animated Teaser / Danny Robins Music Therapy / BBC Radio 4 Comedy

rbgifRed Nose Day 2009 / Nose Characters Design / Comic Relief

rndmain

For the 2009 Red Nose Day campaign, Comic Relief commissioned a range of special limited edition character-based nose designs exploring the theme of laughter. Dizzy, Wiggly, Wacky and Toofy form Series One - which looks at evoking laughter through four distinct funny-faced cartoon characters, complete with goggly eyes! Series Two depicts different types of laughter as individual personalities The Howler, The Chuckler, The Giggler and The Sniggerer. All noses were designed for a Vacmould production process and also feature embossed lineart for more definition.

cwmicoComes with Music / Commercial / Nokia

For the "Comes with Music" campaign, Nokia commissioned digital storyboards for an above-the-line advert showing the experience of using their digital music store. These high-end storyboards illustrate aspects of the service and establish a clear direction for the aesthetic. A visual guide for the production team created in Photoshop and Illustrator.

sugifSurf'sUp / Web Campaign Concepts / Sony Pictures UK

Concepts for the "Surf's Up" web campaign.

tsticoThe Sound Theory / Animated Cartoon Show Development / Music Management

To promote British indie band "The Sound Theory", Music Management commissioned a cartoon series based on members of the band. As Character Designer and Writer on the show, I was responsible for developing the key characters, exploring the visual direction and story themes for the series.

The first style presents the band as a unit. The characters are almost indistinguishable in design except for their hairdos and instruments. The unified designs reflect the close bond between the lads and their mad hairdos! These were hand drawn on paper then digitally inked and coloured in Photoshop. The second style elaborates on the mad hair and offers more variation in design between characters, reflecting their personalities as individuals within a group. This version sheds the cutesy image in favour of a look that caricatures the band’s on-stage presence. These characters were hand drawn on paper then digitally inked and coloured in Painter.

pragmagifP.R.A.G.M.A. / Feature Film Concept Art / Gerardo Orlando

These character designs were created during pre-production for the animated climax in the predominantly live-action Sci-Fi feature film "P.R.A.G.M.A." directed by Gerardo Orlando. As Character Designer on the project, I was responsible for creating appealing, stylised human designs to be used as animated avatars within a virtual world. In appearance the designs had to relate as virtual counterparts to the film’s characters and remain free of Sci-Fi conventions. The avatars were also expected to deliver believable performances by depicting the choices made by the live-action characters. All designs were hand drawn on paper then digitally inked in Painter and coloured in Photoshop.
